Sandcastle Educational Consulting was born 24 years ago when two of the original members of what’s now Disney Interactive teamed up to design games for The Learning Company. Melissa went on to earn her PhD and became a successful educational psychologist (and remains a consultant for Sandcastle), while Carol Snider, Sandcastle’s current Principal Consultant spent the next two decades designing, producing, and product managing a wide variety of educational media products and services for companies such as:

Edmark: Designed and produced the award-winning Countdown Carnival product and all associated materials, as well as other successful educational software products for pre-school and elementary school kids. As a key team player, interfaced with engineers, artists, project managers, and marketing specialists.

Humongous Entertainment: Led design and educational content creation for Blue’s Clues CD-ROM products. Wrote box copy, manuals, online help files and other marketing materials for Blue’s Clues, Freddi Fish, Putt-Putt, Spy Fox, Pajama Sam and Backyard Sports CD-ROM products.

Educational Insights: Designed and produced games, workbooks, multi-media kits, and classroom instructional aides and wrote accompanying parent and teacher guides.

Microsoft: Developed curriculum and content for My Personal Tutor II. Also served as an education advocate in the design and development of game-based learning for a set of content authoring tools designed to allow the education community to create, assemble, and present rich-interactive content that increase discovery and allow learners to go at their own pace and learning style. Wrote specs, assured educational relevance, and coordinated with cross-platform teams.
(Carol also worked extensively with many diverse Microsoft business units as a Senior Project Manager on a variety of non-educational digital marketing projects.)

Comprehensive Health Education Foundation: Produced a series of award-winning MTV-style videos and accompanying curriculum guides focusing on relevant youth issues for this nonprofit health education organization. Oversaw all aspects of production and development, from hiring, managing and mentoring internal and external team members to devising and implementing associated timelines and budgets.

ETR (Education, Training & Research): In partnership with The Gates Foundation’s high school reform efforts, Carol directed the design and development of a knowledge management website supporting Foundation grantees, managing the development timeline and a budget of over $3 million.

KidsLaunch: Designed and developed kids’ online activities, conducted market research., and served as the developmental and educational specialist for this Internet marketing start-up.

KnowWonder: Designed and developed a concept for a children’s version of Microsoft Money.

Reality Based Learning: (Now SRA/McGraw-Hill Technology): Managed all aspects of educational design and development of curriculum-based software for this Internet start-up, from research through implementation.

America Online: Wrote a monthly column reviewing children’s software products
